3rd stab at sharing my concerns about Donald Trump and the ambitions of his
MAGA-Republican supporters.
American Values in the Trump Era was written in 2019 shortly before Trump’s first
trial for impeachment. Fascism in America in the 21 st Century was written in 2022
after the January 6 th Insurrection and his second impeachment trial. These 3
books are all available online in paperback and e-book format.
Having practiced law for more than 3 decades, I have a great deal of respect for
the importance of the Rule of Law in protecting and defending Democracy in
America and other peace-loving nations. Democracies, by definition, have no king
or supreme leader. They are dependent on the Rule of Law to function for the
people, protecting individual rights while providing law and order.
The alternative to the Rule of Law is the Rule of Power. The world has witnessed
the Rule of Power in in such authoritarian regimes as Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy,
Putin’s Russia, and Xi Jinping’s China. The results for the people have often been
devastating.
Most Americans would agree that the Rule of Power is not a desirable direction
for our democratic republic. The vast majority of Americans prefer a government
by and for the people, with equal justice under the law. Unfortunately, the MAGA
Manifesto makes it clear that Trump and his followers are transparently working
to re-shape our government so that extreme power is held in the Executive
Branch, at the expense of the Legislative and Judicial Branches of government. If
successful, it will be the end of nearly 250 years of democracy.
This is the same philosophy that is being pursued in Israel in the summer of 2023
by Prime Minister Netanyahu and the far-right influences, attempting to neuter
the Israeli Judiciary and Knesset. Mass protests by the people have so far failed to
deter the far-right from their mission. If Netanyahu and his abettor are ultimately
successful, it will be the end of three-quarters of a century of democracy in Israel.
